Erwin-Penland
is South Carolina's largest full-service advertising agency,
offering advertising, marketing, public relations, interactive,
events/trade show management and strategic planning services.
Billings for 2001 closed at $76 million in capitalized billings
and reached $105 million in 2002. The agency's account roster
includes many of the region's, as well as many of America's,
category leaders. In 2001, AdWeek recognized Erwin-Penland as
the fastest-growing agency in the Southeast, and the 6th fastest-growing
in the country.
Erwin-Penland began operations in 1986 following
the purchase of Penland Advertising by Joe and Gretchen Erwin,
who were returning to South Carolina from New York City where
each worked for a top 10 international advertising agency -
Joe at D'Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles; Gretchen at Dancer,
Fitzgerald, Sample (Saatchi & Saatchi). The Erwins soon
recruited Allen Bosworth, who had worked with Joe in New York,
to join EP as Director of Client Services.
The agency opened with one account and by 1993 had reached $10
million in billings. In 1991 EP moved into the Benevolent Temple
building in downtown Greenville. The building, which is on the
National Historic Register, allowed the Agency space for continuing
expansion. In the mid-90's, the Agency moved into the top 10
in size of all South Carolina-based ad agencies, and by 1999
was in the top five.
In 2000, the Agency built its own headquarters building adjacent
to the Benevolent Temple building. The structure consists of
30,000 square feet, and along with the recently renovated top
floor of the original building, is home to Erwin-Penland's more
than 100 employees. EP's own digital a/v studio is also housed
in the original building.
Erwin-Penland has produced the United Way of Greenville County's
Annual Campaign video and materials pro bono for the past 6
years. The firm also provides pro bono support to Imagine Nation
- the Children's Museum of the Upstate and to the S.C. Governor's
School for the Arts. From 1993-98, Erwin-Penland donated full-service
advertising representation to the S.C. Special Olympics, and
President Joe Erwin continues to serve on their Statewide Advisory
Board.
Erwin-Penland is a member of the American Association of Advertising
Agencies. The shop has been widely hailed as one of the most
technologically-advanced marketing firms in the nation, and
a 1995 AAAA's study ranked it as the 2nd most computerized ad
agency of its size in America. The firm has received broad coverage
in trade magazines including Advertising Age, AdWeek and BrandWeek,
and has won creative awards for every medium in which it works
- print, radio, collateral, television, outdoor and interactive
development. |
