COLUMBIA S.C., April 4, 2003 – Greenville Democrat Joe Erwin’s campaign to become South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman landed a big endorsement in Columbia this afternoon. At a press conference at Democratic Party headquarters, Congressman James Clyburn endorsed Erwin to be the next Chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party. Congressman Clyburn said “I have known Joe Erwin for 25 years and consider him to be energetic and visionary. He will bring pride and competence to South Carolina Democrats and to South Carolinians.”

“Congressman Jim Clyburn, known for his relentless dedication to making government work for the people, represents the best of what we are as Democrats. His endorsement of my candidacy is truly an honor,” Erwin stated. “It humbles me and inspires me to do the best I can for South Carolina Democrats, and indeed, all citizens of South Carolina.”

Erwin, 46, is president and CEO of Erwin-Penland, Inc., South Carolina’s largest advertising and marketing firm. Erwin has been traveling extensively across the state meeting with Democratic Party leaders, volunteers and voters, and the endorsement by Congressman Clyburn is likely only to add to this campaign’s momentum. The chairmanship will be decided on May 3 in Columbia by delegates to the party's annual state convention.
