COLUMBIA S.C., April 21, 2003 – Greenville Democrat Joe Erwin’s campaign to become South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman received the endorsement of the state’s highest-ranking elected woman today. At a press conference at Democratic Party headquarters, S.C. Superintendent of Education Inez Tenenbaum announced her support for Erwin to be the next Chairman of the South Carolina Democratic Party. Tenenbaum said “Joe Erwin is a man with a vision for the South Carolina Democratic Party. He will bring a new sense of commitment to the Party. He has extraordinary communication skills, is a self-made businessman and strong community leader. The S.C. Democratic Party could not have a finer candidate, and we are fortunate he wants to be our leader.”

Erwin, 46, is president of Erwin-Penland, Inc., South Carolina’s largest advertising and marketing firm. In addition to endorsements from elected officials, Erwin’s campaign has gained momentum on the grassroots level, as he has traveled across the state meeting with Party leaders, volunteers and voters – many of them long-time activists with Democratic Women’s organizations. The endorsement by Superintendent Tenenbaum is a sign of Erwin’s appeal to long-time Party volunteers, including Democratic Women. The chairmanship will be decided on May 3 in Columbia by delegates to the party's annual state convention.
