COLUMBIA S.C., April 29, 2003 – At a
press conference at the South Carolina Statehouse, Joe Erwin’s
campaign to become South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman
continued to pick up momentum with endorsements by elected Democratic
members of the S.C. General Assembly, including the minority
leaders from the House and Senate. Senator John Land, Minority
Leader, stated that "Joe Erwin is a new face and a breath
of fresh air for South Carolina. He will bring unity and order
to the Democratic Party." The House Minority Leader, James
E. Smith, Jr., joined in stating, "We Democrats will win
if we take the initiative to take our message of hope and action
to the people of South Carolina, and Joe Erwin is the person
to lead our party in that effort."
Also in attendance was State Treasurer Grady Patterson, who
strongly endorsed Erwin. Patterson said “Joe is a competent,
capable, successful businessman from the Upstate, who will lead
the South Carolina Democratic Party to great things for years
to come. His focus and attention are in the right place, delivering
our Democratic message of hope and prosperity to the people
of South Carolina." Patterson’s endorsement follows
last week’s endorsement by Inez Tenenbaum, the other South
Carolina Democrat holding state-wide office.
Erwin, 46, is president and CEO of Erwin-Penland, Inc., South
Carolina’s largest advertising and marketing firm. Since
Erwin announced his intent to seek the Democratic chairmanship,
every Democratic state and federal officeholder has backed Erwin.
The endorsements from members of the General Assembly, who live
and work in their home districts, reflects the chord Erwin has
struck with voters and local Democratic volunteers across the
state, and the support he has received from them as he’s
traveled around South Carolina.
