COLUMBIA (AP) - U.S. Rep. James Clyburn on Friday endorsed Greenville advertising executive Joe Erwin's bid to become the state Democratic Party chairman.

Erwin said Clyburn, D-S.C., was the second person he called after deciding to make a bid to replace outspoken Dick Harpootlian, who is stepping down after two terms running the party.

Erwin already has the backing of U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings and U.S Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C.

"Hollings is 100 percent behind his candidacy," said Hollings spokesman Andy Davis.

Davis said a letter from Hollings, Clyburn and Spratt endorsing Erwin should go out in about a week to delegates at the Democratic Party Convention on May 3.

Erwin faces Margaret Feagin, of West Columbia, in the race. Feagin is a Democratic Party executive committee member and has been president of the state Democratic Women for two years.
